Sony has announced that its current-gen PlayStation 5 console has now crossed the 40 million units sold mark as of July 16. This feat is all the more impressive when taking into account the supply issues that plagued the console during its first few years on the market.

In the announcement post PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan thanked the PlayStation community.

With the support of PlayStation fans, we have reached a milestone of 40 million PS5 consoles sold through to gamers since launch. Thank you so much to our community of gamers – without you this would have been an impossible task.

By comparison Microsoft’s Xbox Series X|S recently crossed the 21 million units sold threshold, barely half that of its PS5 competitor. And with hardware sales declining significantly over the last year, as revealed in Microsoft’s FY23 Q4 earnings report, it doesn’t seem likely that the Xbox will start chipping into Sony’s 2 to 1 advantage at this point.

Likely Xbox’s best hope lies in big AAA exclusives like Starfield and Forza Motorsport. That and of course a successful acquisition of Activision Blizzard and its Call of Duty franchise, which at this point seems all but certain.
