Microsoft has made Time magazine’s list of 2021’s 100 most influential companies. In the official profile that marks the moment, the magazine dubs Microsoft as a “titan” in the industry, highlighting how the Redmond giant has been “powering the lockdown” with its technologies.

Appearing in the same category as Facebook, Samsung, Amazon, and Google, Time’s profile for Microsoft mentions how the company has managed to “deftly exploited a portfolio of businesses exquisitely tailored to benefit from the global lockdown.” Time’s Eben Shapiro also gets into how Big Redmond managed to increase its stock price by nearly 50% despite the pandemic, mainly driven by Azure, and the need for Microsoft technologies like Teams and Microsoft 365 when working from home.

The magazine even mentions how Microsoft purchased ZeniMax Media, invested in cloud-data centers in high-growth areas, and also launched two new gaming consoles. There’s a unique mention of Microsoft Mesh, too, which was revealed at Ignite 2021 as a new social mixed reality platform that can create shared experiences for people who are in different locations.

Microsoft’s longtime rival, Apple, ended up as a “leader” in 2021’s 100 most influential companies for “doubling down on defining products.” Sony also landed as a leader too, for “creating high-demand game consoles.” Nintendo, meanwhile, came in as an innovator, for “creating communities,” and Zoom for “enabling virtual connection.”

While Microsoft hasn’t had quite the hardware year that Apple or other companies have had, the company definitely seems to be investing in things that matter most for the future. It’s great to see this growth under the leadership of Satya Nadella, who was previously listed by Time as one of the top 100 most influential people, back in 2018.
