Windows 10 build 9888 will still allow you to upgrade to the Consumer Preview in 2015

Eager beta testers who are enrolled in the Windows Insider Program were recently given build 9879 to tinker around with. Just a few days ago, we exclusively unveiled build 9888, only for it to leak onto the internet giving everyone the chance to play around with a new build.

However, the biggest concern that everyone likely had (including us) was the upgradability of the build. Would build 9888 allow us to upgrade to the newest build that Microsoft plans to release in January of 2015 or were we screwed because we installed a build that wasn’t released via the Insider Program? Turns out, we are safe.

According to Microsoft’s Gabe Aul, those of you running build 9888 are still able to upgrade to the Consumer Preview. We are expecting a new build in January of next year, whether it will be called the Consumer Preview has yet to be officially confirmed. Windows 10 Consumer Preview will indeed happen sometime early next year.
