Microsoft has released Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 27764 to the Canary Channel. This build includes new features and improvements to the Start Menu, Dynamic Lighting, Input, and Narrator, as well as several fixes and known issues.
One of the most significant changes in this build is an update to the Start Menu. When right-clicking on apps pinned to the Start menu in Windows 11, jump lists will be shown for apps that have them.
Jump lists are menus in Windows 11 that appear when you right-click a pinned app and show things like recent files or frequently used actions. They were previewed earlier this year in another channel of the Windows Insider Program.
In addition, the Dynamic Lighting settings page has been improved. The page shows a placeholder message when no compatible devices are attached and disables the Brightness and Effects controls. The page has also added forward, backward, outward, and inward direction options to the wave effect and forward direction options to the gradient effect.
For those with the IME toolbar enabled and typing in Chinese or Japanese, Windows 11 is beginning to roll out a change where it hides the IME toolbar when apps are in full-screen mode.
New functionalities have also been added to Narrator scan mode. With the new ‘Skip past links’ and ‘Jump to lists’ options, users can navigate to text after a link or quickly access a list on a web page or a document.
The Windows 11 team says it has improved the speech-to-text and text-to-speech experience on Windows. However, users of Narrator, voice access, live captions, live translations, and voice typing might see a message asking them to update their language files manually. The language files will be released separately through the Microsoft Store.
This build addresses general issues, including a bug check that some Insiders encountered with the error PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA while using their PC with Build 27754 installed.
Other problems fixed in Build 27764 include File Explorer hanging when browsing a folder with lots of media, text overlapping in the taskbar for users with left-aligned taskbars and secondary monitors, issues with pointer trails and the mouse cursor, and more.
As always, there are several known issues to be aware of. For example, suppose you’re joining the Canary Channel on a new Copilot+ PC from the Dev Channel, Release Preview Channel, or retail. In that case, you’ll lose the Windows Hello pin and biometrics to sign in to your PC with the error 0xd0000225 and the error message “Something went wrong, and your PIN isn’t available.” You should be able to re-create your PIN by clicking “Set up my PIN.” Microsoft says it’s investigating reports that some Insiders are still experiencing rollbacks (with error code 0xc190010) when attempting to install the latest Canary builds.
