send files via DM on Instagram

As per reports, Instagram is testing a new feature that allows you to send files to others via DM.

First reported by Alessandro Paluzzi on X (formerly Twitter), the new Files feature will be listed in a menu that will replace the existing Stickers option at the extreme right of the chat’s text bar. The latter will now be included within the same menu alongside the Add yours, Saved replies, and Avatars options.

Initial reports suggest that the file sharing via DM feature may be limited to Business accounts on Instagram, but there has been no official confirmation so far. Also, there’s little information on the supported file size and formats, though PDF and audio clips should be available

A few have also raised concerns about the security implications of the feature. With cyberattacks on the rise, the concern is valid. Sharing of PDFs or other files embedded with malware may result in losing access to the account, corrupting data on the phone, or even financial loss.

So, Instagram should come up with a protection mechanism that’s up-to-date with the latest attack techniques and malware types in order to keep the user base safe.

No matter the case, file sharing on Instagram will improve the communication standards of the app, which has so far been limited to sharing posts and reels. And soon, you won’t have to switch from Instagram to WhatsApp or Gmail to share files with someone.
