If you’re just witnessing YouTube opening on keypress or mouse click randomly on a PC or a Mac, you’re not alone. This issue can happen on any browser you may use as well. It’s certainly annoying for YouTube to open out of the blue and disrupt your work or gaming session, but we can help you fix it quickly.
If it’s not OS specific or browser specific, the issue is caused by an addon or extension of the browser and the name of the culprit is Ad Speedup.
This extension speeds up the video up to 16x when it detects an ad, but now it’s obviously bugged. If you’ve installed this extension, disable or uninstall it until the developers fix it.
What do I do if YouTube opens randomly?
As we mentioned above, you have to disable or uninstall Ad Speedup in your browser. To do that, click the menu button and select Extensions > Manage extensions in Chrome. You may also click directly on the puzzle piece icon from the top right of the window.
Here, look for Ad Speedup and click on Remove or click on the button to its right to disable it.
This is the simple method on how to disable or remove the extension on Google Chrome, but the process is similar on any other browser you may use. We also have a guide on how to remove stubborn extensions on Edge.
If you didn’t install Ad Speedup, but you’ve installed other extensions or addons lately, disable all of them and reenable them one by one to see which one is producing the random YouTube pop-up.
To recap, if YouTube is opening randomly in a new tab or window on your browser when you press a key or click with your mouse, disable or remove the Ad Speedup extension, or any extensions you might have installed prior to this issue.
