Key notes

  • Opera Software just launched Opera One.
  • The latest generation of its beloved web browser features tons of improvements.
  • Now, the browser is out for early adopters and is set to replace the flagship.

Opera Software, now at 35 million downloads strong, has just launched Opera One. The new, Chromium-based browser is set to replace the flagship Opera for all Windows, MacOS, and Linux devices with modular design, smooth UI experience, full AI integration on the sidebar, and tab islands.

Joanna Czajka, Opera’s product director, says that the new browser is designed to bring a new, flowing experience for multi-tasking users with a more powerful and feature-rich interface open for a generative AI-based future – like the hotly-anticipated DALL-E-powered Bing Image Creator.

Tab Islands are a natural way of arranging your tabs into contextual groups without disturbing your flow. They make it easy to keep tabs that relate to each other in groups that you can open and collapse as needed. This makes browsing with many tabs more efficient, allowing for a more pleasant, liquid browsing experience.

Later this year, Opera One will replace the Opera flagship browser on all Windows, macOS, and Linux devices. But, if you’re not familiar with this browser, check our review of Opera.

So, why should we be excited about Opera One, you may ask?

What’s new in Opera One?

The new Opera One revolutionizes how users engage with their browsers through modular design, providing a smooth and seamless navigation experience that is easier to understand and use.

This design could enable users to customize their browsing experience by selecting and organizing specific features or modules. This could include bookmarking tools, extensions, themes, and more, all of which could be easily added or removed as needed.

Ultimately, a more intuitive and customizable browsing experience could lead to increased user satisfaction and productivity, which brings us to a smoother UI experience and cleaner, decluttered look.

On the sidebar, Opera One boasts ChatGPT, ChatSonic, and other AI features on both the sidebar and address bar. Opera’s updates in early 2023 that, included the addition of generative AI features into the browser, have paved the way for this new, redesigned browser.

In the future, Opera will morph to become fully modular, making the browser UI more intuitive and functional.

Opera One is the first instance of our smart, modular design within Opera. It marks the beginning of a chain of innovation, including Opera’s own AI engine to be shipped in the coming months. The web just got smarter and faster with generative AI. With Opera One, we are ready to embrace and lead that change.

With the so-called Tab Islands feature, you can say goodbye to the hassles of jumping between tabs. It keeps related tabs to each other with clear and distinguishable UX, separated by colors and clear island borders. As you browse more and more, the browser will learn to put them together without forcing it.
