Yesterday, a now-deleted post on the official French Xbox Wire website claimed that Microsoft had a two years console exclusivity for Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision for Gaming. Even though the post was quickly deleted, the information has been picked up by several websites but Microsoft has since confirmed to us that it was inaccurate.
“A blog post was mistakenly published by a local Xbox team that included inaccurate information regarding exclusivity of Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision on Xbox Series X|S. There is no exclusivity agreement of either tech on Xbox. We are proud to partner with Dolby to offer Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision to gamers on Xbox and will have more to share about the general availability of Dolby Vision on Xbox Series X|S soon,” a Microsoft spokesperson told us.
Dolby Atmos has been supported on Xbox consoles for many years now, and Dolby Vision for Gaming is currently being tested with Xbox Insiders. The exclusivity deal that was mistakenly announced in the French Xbox Wire blog post would have meant that Sony’s PlayStation 5 consoles wouldn’t be able to immediately integrate these technologies, but that’s apparently not the case. Sony’s PlayStation 5 does not currently support either Dolby Atmos or Dolby Vision for Gaming.
Dolby Atmos is a great spatial audio technology that can really elevate your gaming experience, though not all Xbox games come with a Dolby Atmos mix. As for Dolby Vision, Xbox One consoles have been supporting the superior HDR format for media content for a couple of years now, but Dolby Vision for Gaming will require an Xbox Series X or Series S console.
