Mike Ybarra: we’re working to allow any developer to upload Universal Apps to Xbox

Since the Xbox Summer Update released yesterday, Universal Windows Apps have been available to Xbox users – apps such as Groove Music and DailyMotion are just a couple of the apps already available in the ever-converging Xbox and Windows Store’s, however, Universal Apps on Xbox are currently limited to approved developers only and is not like the Windows Store where any developer can publish an app to it.

Mike Ybarra, Head of Platform Programming at Xbox, tweeted out to say that they are currently working out the details on allowing any developer to upload Universal Apps to the Xbox platform:

Without the final details being known, it is unclear if they will allow all developers to upload their Universal Apps on Xbox or if there will be tightened restrictions for the platform. Nonetheless, if plans go ahead, we could be seeing a hefty influx of new apps making their way to Xbox “soon”.

We’ll keep an eye out for the finalised details in the coming days and weeks ahead.
