New Outlook for Windows will soon be able to open all attachments in their native desktop apps

Microsoft is working on a feature with the feature ID 401123 for the new Outlook for Windows app, which is focused on streamlining user experience while handling email attachments.

Here is the description mentioned on the Microsoft 365 Roadmap site:

In the new Outlook for Windows, users can now open attachments of all types in their respective desktop app by double-clicking them. #newoutlookforwindows.

With this feature, you will be able to open attachments directly in the desktop application that is compatible with it by simply double-clicking them.

It will eliminate downloading attachments before viewing them in a compatible application. Whether it is an Excel spreadsheet, Word document, or PowerPoint presentation, all you need to do is go to the email with the attachment on Outlook and click on it. It will open in its native desktop app, ready to be reviewed or edited.

The feature was added to the Microsoft 365 roadmap on June 20, 2024, and will be ready to roll out in August 2024. Once available, you will be able to access the feature on your desktop app for Windows 11 and future releases.

This can be seen as another effort to improve productivity tools within its ecosystem and allow users to manage tasks without disrupting the workflow.
