OpenAI to Reportedly Begin Ads Testing in ChatGPT Today; "Updated Chat Model" Also Coming This Week
There was a time when we used to complain about Google for injecting sponsored results, aka ads, in search results. In fact, that trend hasn’t stopped. That, too, alongside the headache of AI Overviews, has been killing traffic for websites. Now that we are living in the AI era, most of you may have thought that ads would get off our backs. But sadly, that’s not happening either.
OpenAI reportedly starts ad rollout in ChatGPT from today
In the past few months, there have been multiple rumors around OpenAI testing ads inside ChatGPT. Turns out, the rumors were true. OpenAI, when it launched the ChatGPT Go plan in the U.S., confirmed that it will start rolling out ads inside ChatGPT. At the time, the company didn’t mention exactly when, nor did it provide any timeline. It only said that ads would roll out to ChatGPT in the coming weeks.
Now, it seems that the week is finally here. That’s according to a report by CNBC, which reports that OpenAI plans to start testing ads inside ChatGPT starting today, February 9 (via The Verge). A source familiar with the matter told the news outlet that OpenAI “expects ads to make up less than half of its revenue long term.”
In a reply to a Super Bowl ad by Anthropic that takes a dig at OpenAI’s plans for ChatGPT ads, Altman tweeted, calling the campaign “clearly dishonest.” That’s not all; he also added that ads in ChatGPT will only be visible to logged-in users on the free or Go plan. The report also adds that “OpenAI expects ads to make up less than half of its revenue long term.”
OpenAI also plans an “updated Chat model”
As far as company news is concerned, OpenAI is also reportedly planning to launch an “updated Chat model” this week. If the report is accurate, that would mean two model-related moves within the span of just a week. In case you missed it, late last week, OpenAI released GPT-5.3-Codex, moments after Anthropic dropped Claude Opus 4.6.
