Microsoft is rolling out an update that it says will improve its virtual desktop experience. The company has officially announced the general availability of Teams optimizations (WebRTC Redirector Service) for the Windows App on iOS and Android.

In the announcement post, the company notes that the latest update focuses on improving calls and meetings while accessing Windows 365 and Azure Virtual Desktop on mobile devices.

Microsoft says the WebRTC Redirector Service is designed to change how audio and video are handled during Teams calls. “By leveraging media redirection techniques, audio and video processing can occur on the local device rather than entirely within the virtual session, which is intended to support more responsive interactions during meetings,” notes the company.

Microsoft further adds that Teams optimizations are designed to support the following:

  • Improved audio and video handling during Teams calls and meetings
  • More consistent media experiences across a range of network conditions
  • A familiar Teams experience when joining meetings from mobile devices using the Windows App

Back in the preview phase, these optimizations were tested in real-world scenarios, and they now appear ready for a wider rollout. If you’re using the Windows App on iOS or Android, you can start using Teams optimizations today. The Windows App is available on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.

Moreover, it’s worth noting that the company has also delayed native screen sharing for Teams on macOS until mid-May. That said, the company is also preparing some practical upgrades for Teams, including a DND setting directly on Windows, smarter meetings and video summaries, and more.
