Microsoft Explains Why Some Windows 11 Updates Now Install Slower

Microsoft says some slow updates are part of the recovery process

windows update longer

Microsoft says slower Windows Update installations are not always a sign that something went wrong. In some cases, Windows 11 intentionally spends more time during the spinning-circle update screen to recover from installation problems automatically, as Windows Latest writes.

The company explained that Windows can now perform background recovery steps while updates install. Instead of immediately failing or rolling back, Windows attempts to repair the update process and retry problematic operations behind the scenes.

Windows Update now tries to fix itself automatically

According to Microsoft, Windows 11 now detects update installation issues in real time. When the system encounters a problem, it can automatically retry failed operations, repair corrupted update states, and continue installation without forcing users into vague error screens.

That means some updates may now appear slower because Windows is actively attempting recovery instead of failing immediately.

Microsoft says the goal is to improve update success rates and reduce frustrating rollback scenarios that have affected Windows Update for years.

The company noted that Windows may take “additional steps in the background” during installation to help updates complete successfully. Longer installation times can therefore become part of the normal recovery process.

Why Microsoft says this matters

Microsoft claims the new behavior should especially help devices with unstable internet connections, interrupted update sessions, or systems that remain offline for long periods.

The company believes the changes will reduce failed updates and vague Windows Update errors that often leave users with little explanation about what actually went wrong.

Microsoft also says it continues working on download and installation performance improvements. According to the company, some systems should already see faster downloads and quicker update installations, although the rollout remains gradual.

Part of Microsoft’s broader Windows 11 strategy

The update changes are part of Microsoft’s wider effort to improve Windows 11 reliability and reduce user frustration around Windows Update.

Over the past few months, Microsoft has introduced several update-related improvements while also acknowledging new issues affecting certain releases.

Recently, Microsoft confirmed that KB5083631 may require an extra reboot during installation. The company also acknowledged that the April 2026 Windows updates can trigger backup-related issues because of blocked drivers.

Microsoft appears focused on improving Windows 11’s reputation as the company continues trying to rebuild trust around update stability and overall reliability.
