Valve’s controller originally sold out shortly after launch, forcing the company to introduce reservation queues during restocks. Even with strong demand and a loyal fanbase, the controller faced criticism because compatibility outside Steam is limited. Many users had to depend on third-party workarounds to make the hardware function properly on unsupported devices.

HID Remapper Now Supports Steam Controller Features

Developer Jacek Fedoryński confirmed that HID Remapper now works with the Steam Controller and supports all controller inputs.

The latest update added support for both standard and advanced controls, including trackpads, touch sensors, grip sensors, gyro functionality, accelerometer data, and additional rear buttons. The update also supports orientation quaternion values, giving users access to nearly the entire feature set of Valve’s controller.

HID Remapper Uses Hardware Instead of Software

Unlike regular remapping applications, HID Remapper works as a configurable USB hardware dongle placed between the controller and the target device.

Because the remapping happens directly through hardware, users do not need to run additional software on a PC or console. This approach can improve compatibility across platforms that normally do not fully support the Steam Controller.

Steam Controller Could Work on Switch 2 and PS5

Fedoryński said the setup can already work with Android devices and the Nintendo Switch 2.

The controller may also function on the PlayStation 5 through adapters such as Brook FGC2, although direct console compatibility may still depend on future adapter support.

This gives Steam Controller owners another option for using Valve’s hardware outside the Steam ecosystem. The update could make the controller far more useful on consoles, handhelds, and mobile devices where support has traditionally been limited.

In other news, Valve’s rumored Steam Machine recently appeared in the Vulkan conformance database, hinting at possible future hardware plans.
