Nintendo Switch 2 Sales Drop Sharply in Japan After Latest Price Hike

Nintendo‘s decision to hike the price of the Switch 2 doesn’t seem to be going well, at least in Japan for now. A new sales data shared by Japanese gaming news outlet, Famistu, suggests that only days after Nintendo raised the console’s price in Japan, sales appear to have fallen off a cliff (via Insider Gaming).

Switch 2 sold lesser than 40,000 units in Japan following the major price hike

Apparently, only 31,751 units of the Nintendo Switch 2 were during the week of May 25 to May 31, a massive drop from the 247,880 units sold the week before.

And yes, the increased price is to blame for the poor sales. For those unaware, Nintendo increased the Switch 2’s price from roughly ¥50,000 to around ¥60,000 on May 25 in Japan. It’s not just Switch 2 that has dropped. The original Nintendo Switch also experienced a noticeable drop in sales during the same period, falling from 2,731 units one week to only 229 units the next.

While launch demand naturally cools over time, a decline of this size paints a clear picture of how much pricing can influence Nintendo’s momentum, especially in a market where the company traditionally dominates. Not to forget, the new, hiked price for Switch 2 will take effect starting September 1 across the US, Canada, and more. It will be interesting to see how the Switch 2 sales hold up in those regions.

Speaking of Switch 2, Nintendo has also confirmed it will start selling a new version of its latest gaming console in the EU with replaceable battery. The company is doing so to comply with comply with new EU regulations. The upcoming changes could make battery replacements far simpler and potentially extend the lifespan of the console for years.
