New Nintendo Switch 2 With Replaceable Battery Confirmed for EU Launch by February 2027
As expected, Nintendo has officially announced one of the most consumer-friendly Switch 2 changes yet, and surprisingly, it has nothing to do with performance or new features. As first reported by The Verge, Nintendo has updated parts of its hardware strategy to comply with new European Union battery regulations. This would eventually make it easier to replace batteries in the Nintendo Switch 2.
The Switch 2 may become much easier to repair
One of the standout changes revolves around battery replacement. Under new EU legislation designed to reduce electronic waste, manufacturers are being pushed to make battery-powered devices easier to service. For Nintendo, that reportedly means future Switch 2 hardware revisions may no longer require heat guns, battery solvents, or difficult disassembly methods just to replace an aging battery.
Nintendo has confirmed transitioning certain products from existing BEE model numbers to new OSM variants that comply with the updated requirements. While Nintendo hasn’t detailed every hardware adjustment yet, the idea is to extend product lifespan and making repairs far more accessible.
Joy-Con changes could follow too
The Switch 2 console may not be the only device affected. Going by the wordings in the document linked above, Nintendo might also be required to make similar modifications to its Joy-Con controllers. While nothing has been officially confirmed, the legislation applies broadly to battery-powered electronics, meaning accessory changes may be unavoidable as well. That being said, Nintendo has yet to clarify exactly which products will receive redesigned internal layouts.
For now, Nintendo‘s focus appears to be compliance. However, the end result may be a Switch 2 that’s easier to maintain, cheaper to repair, and far less likely to end up in a drawer once its battery starts showing its age.
