Speaking in an interview with The Game Business, XBOX’s new Chief Strategy Officer (CSO) Matthew Ball, discussed several challenges facing the gaming industry, including rising development costs, increasing hardware expenses, and player resistance to higher prices.

He also reaffirmed his belief that consoles remain a key part of gaming’s future, pushing back against suggestions that the platform is becoming less relevant.

Ball also confirmed that additional XBOX exclusives are planned, reinforcing Microsoft’s continued commitment to the console market despite ongoing discussions about multi-platform releases.

Advertising Could Help Lower Costs for Players

During the interview, Ball also revisited a topic he has discussed in the past: the potential role of advertising in gaming.

Rather than suggesting advertisements should become a standard part of every game, Ball described them as a possible way to offer lower-cost access to players.

He compared the concept to ad-supported subscription tiers offered by streaming services. In those models, users can choose between paying a lower price and seeing advertisements or paying more for an ad-free experience.

Ball argued that similar options could help expand access to games without forcing all players into the same pricing structure.

“The goal isn’t to cram ads into everything,” Ball explained. Instead, he suggested that the industry should explore whether advertising could help more players access games and franchises that might otherwise be too expensive.

He added that the broader objective would be to maintain affordable gaming experiences while still generating enough revenue to support development teams and increasingly expensive game production cycles.

Ball also touched on the impact of rising hardware costs, noting that they continue to affect long-term planning, including future Project Helix discussions.

Ball Clarifies Comments After Interview

Following the interview, Ball issued a clarification on X to address how some of his remarks were being interpreted.

He noted that he was responding to comments he had made before joining XBOX and emphasized that he was only 10 days into his role when the interview took place.

Ball stressed that he was not outlining Microsoft’s plans or official company positions regarding advertising.

Instead, he said he was discussing advertising as one possible way to create lower-cost alternatives alongside existing premium and ad-free gaming experiences.

Using streaming platforms as an example, Ball pointed to ad-supported subscription tiers from companies such as Netflix and Disney+, where customers can access the same content at a lower monthly price.

He also clarified that he was not advocating for interruptive in-game advertisements. In fact, Ball said he personally believes gameplay interruptions caused by ads would be a negative experience for players.

Ball concluded his post by stating: “At no point do I even mention in-game ads”.

What It Could Mean for XBOX

While Ball made it clear that he was not speaking about any specific Microsoft initiatives, his comments highlight a broader discussion taking place across the gaming industry.

As game development budgets continue to rise and players push back against higher prices, publishers are exploring different business models that could help sustain growth while keeping games affordable.

For now, Ball’s clearest message was that any future discussions around advertising should focus on giving players more choices rather than reducing the quality of the gaming experience.
