Nintendo has kept itself busy lately. Just days after confirming the end of sales of the original Switch via its official Store and detailing the European launch timeline of revised Switch 2 hardware with user-replaceable batteries, a newly spotted job listing may have quietly offered hope for another long-awaited Switch 2 upgrade. Here we are talking about the Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) support while playing in docked mode.

Nintendo is looking for an engineer with VRR experience

As spotted by Nintendo Patents Watch on Bluesky, the company is hiring a Senior Display Engineer who will help design and develop display drivers for current and future hardware. The role also involves improving Nintendo’s display software and researching new technologies that could eventually be deployed across its gaming consoles.

Interestingly, Nintendo lists knowledge of display technologies such as HDR and Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) among the preferred qualifications. The listing doesn’t directly mention Switch 2 or confirm that docked VRR support is under development. However, the timing is interesting because the console already supports VRR through its built-in display, but loses the feature when connected to a TV through the dock.

For those unaware, VRR allows a compatible display to synchronize its refresh rate with a game’s frame rate. In simple terms, it can reduce visible screen tearing and make games with unstable performance appear smoother.

Before Switch 2 launched, Nintendo’s regional websites appeared to suggest broader VRR support. Those references were later removed, with Nintendo eventually confirming that the feature would only work in handheld mode.

That being said, hiring an engineer with VRR knowledge isn’t proof that Nintendo plans to add the feature via a future update. The role covers both existing and upcoming products, meaning the expertise could also be intended for entirely new hardware. However, docked VRR remains one of Switch 2’s most noticeable display omissions. Nintendo hasn’t announced any plans to address it, but the new listing suggests the company may not be finished exploring the technology.

All that said, we’ll keep an eye on every bit of rumors and leak reagarding it. If we hear anything officially, we’ll update this article.
