Nintendo Reportedly Exploring Switch 2 OLED Model for 2028 Launch
Nintendo may not be done evolving the Switch 2 just yet. While the company is still dealing with rising hardware costs and has announced price increases in several markets, a fresh report now suggests another version of the console is already being discussed behind closed doors, one that could finally bring OLED technology to the latest handheld.
Report says Nintendo is evaluating a Switch 2 OLED model
According to a report from ZDNet Korea, Nintendo is currently assessing whether launching a Nintendo Switch 2 OLED model would make financial sense (via X/@jukan05). The report claims no final decision has been made, with the company still weighing manufacturing costs against potential demand before committing to development.
If Nintendo gives the project the green light, development is reportedly expected to begin toward the end of this year. Mass production would then target late 2027, putting the handheld on track for a possible early 2028 release.
The report also claims Samsung Display is the likely supplier for the OLED panel if the project moves forward. However, the biggest hurdle isn’t the display technology itself. It’s the price. Unlike the original Switch, which jumped from a 720p LCD to a sharper OLED panel, the Switch 2 already ships with a 1080p LCD display. That means an OLED version would primarily improve contrast, black levels, and color reproduction rather than increasing resolution.
For now, Nintendo has not announced any OLED variant of the Switch 2. However, if the report proves accurate, the coming months could determine whether the company doubles down on a premium model or sticks with the existing LCD display for the foreseeable future.
