ChatGPT Starts Working on WhatsApp Again for Some Users

ChatGPT is reportedly working on WhatsApp again for some users after European regulators ordered Meta to provide rival AI chatbots with access to the platform.

OpenAI first brought ChatGPT to WhatsApp in 2024. The integration allowed users to interact with the chatbot through a standard WhatsApp conversation without installing another app.

Meta restricted rival AI chatbots

Meta later expanded its own AI assistant across WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, and other services.

In 2025, WhatsApp changed its Business API terms to prevent AI companies from distributing general-purpose chatbots through the platform. The policy effectively removed ChatGPT and other competing assistants from WhatsApp.

The European Union launched an antitrust investigation into Meta over the restrictions. Regulators argued that the company could be using WhatsApp’s dominant market position to limit competition in the AI assistant market.

The European Commission then ordered Meta to allow competing AI chatbots to access the WhatsApp Business API.

ChatGPT is working again for some WhatsApp users

Tweakers.net reports that the ChatGPT chatbot has started responding inside WhatsApp again. The return may follow the EU-enforced policy change, although Meta and OpenAI have not officially confirmed the connection.

Availability remains limited. Some users can add ChatGPT as a WhatsApp contact and receive responses, while others can add the contact but get no reply.

Users don’t need a premium ChatGPT subscription to access the chatbot. The inconsistent availability suggests that OpenAI may be restoring the integration gradually across selected regions.

An official announcement could follow if the rollout expands to more countries.
