Xbox starts testing free cloud gaming with ads for owned games
Microsoft is experimenting with a new way to make Xbox Cloud Gaming more accessible. Starting today, Xbox Insiders can test an ad-supported game streaming experience that lets them stream select games they already own without paying for cloud streaming.
The trial gives eligible players one-hour streaming sessions across supported devices and regions. Before each session begins, players will watch ads, but Microsoft says the gameplay itself remains unchanged. The feature is optional, meaning players can continue using other supported ways to access their games.
Ads appear before gameplay, not during it
Microsoft says advertisements will only play before a streaming session starts, ensuring they don’t interrupt gameplay. The company also emphasized that the core gaming experience remains exactly the same once players are in-game.
According to Xbox, the goal is to lower the cost of accessing cloud gaming while giving more players a chance to enjoy their existing game library without needing additional hardware. The company noted that cloud gaming can also help Xbox One owners play newer Xbox Series X|S titles without upgrading their console immediately.
Microsoft says the focus remains on players
The company acknowledged that advertising has been part of gaming for decades, whether through in-game placements or free-to-play experiences. However, it says this initiative is being designed with players first.
Microsoft outlined several principles that will guide the test, including ensuring ads create value, never interrupt gameplay, remain clearly identifiable as advertisements, and meet the same quality standards as Xbox content. The company also said it plans to gather feedback from Xbox Insiders before deciding how the feature evolves.
As of now, the test is limited to Xbox Insiders and supported regions. Microsoft hasn’t announced when, or if, ad-supported cloud gaming will roll out to all Xbox players.
