Google launches Selfie Video account recovery with deepfake protection built-in

Imagine getting locked out of your Google Account after forgetting your password and losing your phone. That nightmare could soon become the thing from the past. That’s because Google has introduced a new Selfie Video recovery option that allows eligible users regain account access using a short video of themselves.

Google adds a new backup for account recovery

The new feature works as an additional recovery method rather than replacing passwords, passkeys, or two-factor authentication. Users first record a guided selfie video while setting it up.

If they ever lose access to their account, Google asks them to record another short selfie video. The system compares both recordings while performing liveness checks to confirm it’s a real person and not a photo, replayed video, or AI-generated deepfake.

Google says the reference video is encrypted, stored only with the user’s permission, and can be deleted at any time. By default, it is only used for account recovery unless users choose to share it for improving Google’s verification technology.

Not everyone can use it yet

The rollout is happening gradually for eligible personal Google Accounts worldwide. The feature isn’t currently available for Google Workspace, child accounts, or users enrolled in the Advanced Protection Program.

Speaking of security, Google still recommends keeping other recovery options enabled, including recovery phone numbers, backup codes, and passkeys. The selfie video is designed to be another safety net, not the only one.

While many users welcome an easier recovery option, others have raised privacy concerns over storing biometric data, even though Google says users remain in full control of their saved videos.
