Microsoft Makes Switching to New Outlook Easier With Calendar Improvements

Microsoft is improving the switch to New Outlook for Windows by automatically transferring automapped calendars from Outlook Classic. The change comes ahead of the planned New Outlook rollout in March 2027.

At present, automapped calendars may not appear after users switch from Outlook Classic. This can leave users without access to calendars they previously used and may require help from an administrator.

According to MC906502, Microsoft’s update will add these calendars automatically to New Outlook. Users will find them under Calendar in the My Calendars section.

The company began rolling out the feature in June 2026 and expects to complete the rollout by the end of August 2026.

Microsoft is also upgrading shared calendars

Microsoft also plans to improve shared calendars in Outlook and Exchange Online by replacing the older MAPI synchronization model with a newer REST-based system.

The REST model should improve synchronization reliability, performance, delegate consistency, and access to shared calendars.

Microsoft will handle the upgrade on its servers, so users and administrators should not need to change any settings or take additional action. The migration should also happen without interrupting normal Outlook use.

The rollout will begin in August 2026 and should finish during the final week of September.

Some older calendar events may not appear immediately

Microsoft has identified some limitations during the migration process. A newly created calendar folder may remain hidden while Outlook completes synchronization and validation.

The initial synchronization will also exclude events older than one year. Microsoft may add those older events after the first stage of the migration finishes.

Outlook Classic will continue to respect the “Turn on shared calendar improvements” setting. When users disable this option, Outlook Classic will continue using the older MAPI synchronization model.

New Outlook does not offer the same settings and will use REST synchronization by default.
