Microsoft Reveals a Smarter Way to Deploy Windows Updates

Microsoft has published new guidance for IT administrators on configuring Windows Delivery Optimization through Microsoft Intune.

The feature can reduce internet bandwidth use and speed up Windows deployments, especially across organizations managing hundreds or thousands of PCs.

Delivery Optimization reduces repeated downloads

Windows Delivery Optimization uses peer-to-peer sharing to distribute updates and other Microsoft content.

Instead of every PC downloading the same files directly from Microsoft, devices can retrieve cached content from other Windows PCs on the local network.

Administrators can control which devices share content. Microsoft supports peer groups that include devices behind the same NAT, systems on the same subnet, or custom private groups that use a specific Group ID.

This gives IT teams more control over how update traffic moves across their network.

Intune offers bandwidth controls

Microsoft Intune also lets administrators limit foreground and background download bandwidth.

Companies can apply different bandwidth limits during business and non-business hours, helping prevent Windows deployments from consuming too much network capacity during busy periods.

Microsoft also recommends configuring an HTTP download delay. This gives Delivery Optimization time to find an available peer before Windows starts downloading content from another source.

Microsoft recommends seeder deployment rings

Organizations can combine Delivery Optimization with Microsoft Connected Cache, which keeps frequently requested Microsoft content inside the local network.

Microsoft also recommends using deployment rings. IT teams can start with a seeder ring containing around 5% to 10% of devices.

Those PCs receive updates first and populate their peer caches. Larger deployment rings can then retrieve the same content locally instead of repeatedly downloading it over the internet.

For companies managing large Windows fleets, this setup can reduce network pressure while making update and application deployments faster.

Microsoft continues to make changes across Windows management and performance. KB5121003 is causing Teams and Outlook problems on ARM64 devices, while upcoming Task Manager improvements will provide better AI workload tracking.

Microsoft may also introduce better privacy controls for individual Win32 apps.
