OpenAI gives ChatGPT a major healthcare upgrade with Epic EHR access

OpenAI is pushing ChatGPT deeper into healthcare with a new Epic EHR integration and a Healthcare Public Data plugin. The latest move lets healthcare teams connect authorized patient records with trusted medical datasets inside one governed workspace.

ChatGPT can now work with patient records

Healthcare organizations can connect supported Epic environments to ChatGPT for Healthcare. Clinicians can ask about recent visits, lab results, medication changes, specialist recommendations, referrals, and unresolved issues.

ChatGPT can then summarize relevant information from the authorized record. It also points users back to supporting chart information for review. The integration offers two approaches. Teams can bring EHR context into ChatGPT, or use ChatGPT inside supported EHR workflows.

UCSF Health is among the launch partners testing the technology. The organization says the integration could reduce time spent pulling information together across complex patient records.

Nine healthcare data sources join the party

OpenAI is also launching a Healthcare Public Data plugin. It connects ChatGPT for Healthcare with nine official sources, including PubMed, DailyMed, ClinicalTrials.gov, RxNorm, and CMS Coverage.

That means teams can work with specific records, identifiers, fields, and versions. Researchers could compare clinical trial eligibility, while pharmacy teams could check medication labels and warnings. OpenAI says physician evaluations covered 27 clinical use cases and 4,363 ratings. Doctors rated 99.1% of responses safe across those use cases.

Accuracy also varied by connector, with more than 93% of responses rated “good” or better. DailyMed reportedly reached 98.6%, while CMS Coverage scored 93.2%.

OpenAI further says ChatGPT for Healthcare includes enterprise controls such as role-based access, SSO, and audit logs. With an applicable BAA, organizations can support HIPAA-compliant workflows. The rollout includes major healthcare organizations such as AdventHealth, HCA Healthcare, and UCSF. It’s unclear how quickly broader EHR support will arrive.
