Private Equity Firms Reportedly Considered Buying Xbox for $150 Billion
Private equity firms reportedly explored acquiring Microsoft’s Xbox gaming division in a deal that could have valued the business at between $100 billion and $150 billion.
According to a report from The Information, the discussions were brief and exploratory, and they never developed into formal negotiations.
The report did not identify the interested private equity firms or indicate that Microsoft seriously considered selling its gaming business.
Microsoft has not announced plans to sell Xbox. In fact, Asha Sharma recently confirmed that Xbox is not for sale, rejecting speculation about a potential sale.
Xbox could have been valued at up to $150 billion
The reported $100 billion to $150 billion valuation would significantly exceed the approximately $69 billion Microsoft paid to acquire Activision Blizzard in 2023.
Such a deal could include Microsoft’s broader gaming operations, including Xbox Game Studios, Activision Blizzard, Bethesda, major gaming franchises, and subscription services such as Game Pass.
However, the report did not explain how the private equity firms calculated the valuation or whether they submitted any proposals to Microsoft.
With no formal negotiations, acquisition offer, or agreement, the reported interest does not indicate that Microsoft intends to sell Xbox.
In other Xbox news, an Xbox handheld could arrive in 2027, while Project Helix may cost $1,800. Meanwhile, Microsoft is pushing Xbox trade-ins amid hardware shortages, and the company could introduce à la carte Xbox Game Pass subscriptions.
