NVIDIA Could Launch a New RTX 5070 With a Bigger GB203 GPU

NVIDIA is reportedly preparing a new GeForce RTX 5070 variant that uses the larger GB203 GPU instead of the GB205 chip found in the current model. The change may not bring higher performance, as NVIDIA could simply use heavily cut-down GB203 dies for the card.
NVIDIA could switch the RTX 5070 to GB203
The information comes from leaker Hongxing2020, who claims that “the 5070 uses the GB203 core.”
The existing GeForce RTX 5070 officially uses NVIDIA’s GB205-300 GPU, while the larger GB203 already powers the RTX 5070 Ti and RTX 5080.
The difference between the two dies is substantial. GB205 measures 263 mm² and contains 31.1 billion transistors, while GB203 measures 378 mm² and contains 45.6 billion transistors.
The new RTX 5070 may keep the same specifications
Using GB203 does not necessarily mean NVIDIA plans to increase the RTX 5070’s performance.
NVIDIA could use GB203 chips that fail to meet the requirements for the RTX 5070 Ti or RTX 5080. The company could disable a large portion of those GPUs and configure them to match the existing RTX 5070.
There is currently no indication that the GB203-based version will receive more CUDA cores, additional memory, or a wider memory bus.
That would make the new model primarily a GPU die substitution rather than a meaningful upgrade for buyers.
A new NVIDIA driver could arrive September 9
Hongxing2020 also claims that NVIDIA plans to release a new graphics driver on September 9.
The driver could potentially introduce support for the GB203-based RTX 5070, although there is currently no confirmation that the two developments are connected.
NVIDIA has not officially announced the new RTX 5070 variant.
The report comes as NVIDIA RTX 50 GPU prices continue to climb, although the company also plans to sell RTX 50-series graphics cards at MSRP during PAX West.
In other news, NVIDIA has confirmed an RTX Spark launch in October and confirmed that DLSS 5 support will eventually come to RTX 40-series GPUs.
