SharePoint Gets Smarter With New Copilot Context Editing

SharePoint is continuing its AI-focused overhaul, with Microsoft rolling out new Copilot tools that let users select specific page content and tell the AI exactly what they want to change.

Recently, SharePoint got Hero Link support, and Microsoft is now pushing further into AI-assisted page authoring with new Copilot-powered tools.

SharePoint Copilot can now work with selected content

The biggest change is a new context selection feature that lets SharePoint authors highlight specific content and reference it directly when prompting Copilot.

Previously, users had to describe both what they wanted to change and where that content appeared on the page. With context selection, they can point Copilot directly at a specific section, image, text block, or other page element.

That should make AI editing more precise, especially on larger SharePoint pages where users only want to modify one part of the content.

Copilot can edit individual elements or entire pages

Users can ask Copilot to make focused changes to text, images, and page elements, as well as visually restructure individual sections.

They can also apply the same change across an entire SharePoint page when broader edits are required.

Microsoft says users can give Copilot instructions in plain language without relying on special commands or syntax. SharePoint also displays visual indicators for AI-generated changes, allowing authors to review the results before publishing.

Manual SharePoint editing is not going away

Users can still create and edit SharePoint pages manually, and any content generated or changed by Copilot can be adjusted afterward using the regular SharePoint editor.

Because Copilot works with native SharePoint elements, AI-generated sections remain fully editable rather than becoming separate or locked AI content.

Microsoft is gradually rolling out the new functionality to Microsoft 365 customers worldwide.

Organizations need Copilot in SharePoint enabled, while individual authors must have edit permissions for the pages they want to modify.

The update comes as Microsoft continues expanding Copilot across Microsoft 365. Microsoft 365 Copilot can now build entire apps from simple prompts, while Domain Exclusion is rolling out in Copilot again.
