Blizzard Reveals New StarCraft Game as an Open-World Shooter
Blizzard has announced a new StarCraft game, with a release currently planned for 2030, as Variety reports. Despite effectively serving as the third major entry in the franchise, Blizzard has simply titled the game StarCraft.
Revealed during BlizzCon 2026, the new game drops the franchise’s traditional real-time strategy formula in favor of an open-world, story-driven sci-fi shooter.
StarCraft moves 70 years beyond Legacy of the Void
The game takes place in the Koprulu Sector, roughly 70 years after StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void.
Blizzard describes the project as a brand-new game set within the StarCraft universe rather than another RTS sequel. The company has not yet revealed details about the protagonist, playable factions, or the main conflict.
The shift to an open-world shooter marks one of the biggest changes in StarCraft’s history. It will also become the franchise’s first new mainline game since StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void launched in 2015.
The new StarCraft is still early in development
Dan Hay is leading development, but Blizzard says the project remains in an early stage.
The company plans to share gameplay footage and more details about the world over the coming years. With the launch still scheduled for 2030, major elements could change before release.
That’s not all Blizzard revealed at BlizzCon 2026. The company also announced World of Warcraft: Forever and Diablo 5.
