Windows 11 KB5124008 and KB5126052 Are Reportedly Wreaking Havoc on AMD PCs

Windows 11 September updates may be causing AMD driver problems, with one user reporting severe Radeon driver crashes and system instability after installing the latest patches.

Microsoft’s September Patch Tuesday brought numerous improvements and fixed 966 security flaws, but users have started reporting several problems following the update.

A new user report claims that Windows 11 KB5124008 and the KB5126052 .NET update may cause AMD Radeon driver crashes and system instability.

However, this currently appears to be an isolated report, and Microsoft has not confirmed that either update causes the problem.

AMD driver crashes and system freezes

According to the affected user, installing AMD graphics drivers caused driver timeouts within seconds.

Opening AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition reportedly caused the entire PC to freeze while connected displays lost their signal, forcing the user to perform a hard shutdown.

Windows Event Viewer reportedly identified amdxx64.dll as the component involved in the crashes.

The same behavior reportedly occurred with multiple AMD graphics driver versions, including 26.7.1 and 26.6.4, suggesting that simply switching driver versions did not solve the problem.

Two AMD systems reportedly affected

The user reported similar issues on two separate AMD-powered systems.

One PC used a Radeon RX 7900 XTX with a Ryzen 9 7900X3D, while the second featured a Radeon RX 7800 XT with a Ryzen 7 7800X3D.

Installing AMD graphics drivers on both systems allegedly resulted in driver timeouts followed by crashes or severe instability.

Disabling AMD audio helps, but does not fix the problem

Disabling AMD audio drivers reportedly stopped the systems from crashing completely, but it did not resolve the underlying instability.

The affected PC could still freeze when opening a browser, while the Radeon graphics driver continued displaying timeout warnings.

AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition also reportedly remained corrupted and unstable.

September updates have not been confirmed as the cause

Despite the timing, there is currently no confirmation that Microsoft’s September updates caused the AMD problems.

The user rolled back KB5124008 to August’s KB5121003, but the issue reportedly remained. Rolling back the KB5126052 .NET update to KB5120708 also failed to solve the problem.

That makes it difficult to directly link either September update to the crashes.

Microsoft has not acknowledged any AMD Radeon compatibility problems related to KB5124008 or KB5126052 at the time of writing.

AMD users should watch for additional reports

AMD users who started experiencing driver timeouts, display disconnects, or unexplained system crashes after installing the September updates may want to watch for additional reports before assuming that their graphics card or other hardware has failed.

This is not the only issue reported around Microsoft’s September updates. Microsoft is also investigating RDS failures after September Windows Server updates, while some Windows 11 users have encountered USB audio failures.

In addition, Windows 11 KB5124008 breaks shared folders in some Hyper-V Linux virtual machines.
