Diablo 4 Won’t Get Another Expansion Before Diablo 5, Blizzard Confirms

Diablo 4 just entered a very different phase, and Blizzard has made its long-term plan clear. The game will receive seasonal content, but no more expansions are currently planned before Diablo 5 is released.

Diablo 4 expansions are officially off the table

Blizzard confirmed the change during BlizzCon 2026, following the announcement of Diablo 5. Game director Brent Gibson said another expansion is not currently planned for Diablo 4.

At BlizzCon, Diablo game director Brent Gibson spoke to PC Gamer, and said, “We’re all focused on [Diablo 4] seasons and getting to Diablo 5. We feel like we told the Story of Hatred. We had a great conclusion with Lord of Hatred with what we have with Mephisto, and we are moving towards telling the Story of Terror. “The events of Diablo 5 happen 100 years after everything that’s happening with Diablo 4, and so that gives us a lot of room to kind of still ride the wave with all the fans on where the story can go as we make our way there. So, continuity is something that we’re really excited about, but we don’t necessarily have a perfect picture on exactly where that’s going to go because we want to see how fans are reacting season to season.”

As mentioned, Diablo 4 is being abandoned. Gibson has pointed out that there is plenty of room for storytelling through future seasons. Those updates will help connect Diablo 4 with the events leading into its sequel. The shift also makes sense considering Diablo 5 already has a release window. Blizzard confirmed that the sequel is coming in Spring 2029.

Diablo 5 will take place around 100 years after the events of Diablo 4. This gives Blizzard considerable space for future seasonal stories. Interestingly, Blizzard still has substantial Diablo 4 content planned. The Amazon class is coming during the first half of 2027.

Seasons will carry Diablo 4 toward Diablo 5

The upcoming seasonal content could therefore become increasingly important. Blizzard says future stories will continue building the bridge toward Diablo 5. That approach may also let the studio experiment without committing to another large paid expansion. At the same time, players could still receive new classes, seasonal mechanics, quests, and other additions.

Diablo 5 itself is already shaping up as a major reset for the franchise. Sanctuary has fallen, Diablo has won, and the sequel will explore this darker new setting. For now, Diablo 4 players have a road ahead that now looks clear. Blizzard appears ready to keep the game alive through seasons while putting its substantial resources behind Diablo 5.
