Hideo Kojima has finally revealed the lead actor for PHYSINT, and it is none other than Bill Skarsgard. The announcement came during Xbox’s Tokyo Game Show 2026 presentation, adding another major twist to a project that has already made headlines after moving away from PlayStation.

Bill Skarsgard takes the lead in PHYSINT

Kojima confirmed that Skarsgard will play the lead character in the upcoming action-espionage game. The actor joins previously announced cast members Charlee Fraser, Don Lee and Minami Hamabe. Kojima said costume fittings, scans and camera tests with Skarsgard and Fraser earlier this year gave him confidence in the project’s direction.

PHYSINT is being described by Kojima as the culmination of more than 40 years of his career, with the developer aiming to redefine the action-espionage genre. The project is now being published by Xbox after PlayStation stepped away from its collaboration with Kojima Productions earlier this year. Xbox has also confirmed that its relationship with Kojima Productions will extend beyond games into film and television.

That switch has raised plenty of questions about what happened behind the scenes. A WindowsReport report citing Bloomberg says PlayStation reportedly became concerned about PHYSINT’s rising costs, missed development deadlines and potential profitability. The report also claims Sony was reluctant to spend hundreds of millions on a game that might not remain permanently exclusive to PlayStation, particularly after the commercial performance of Kojima’s recent Death Stranding titles reportedly fell short of expectations.

Xbox’s Kojima partnership is getting bigger

The change is notable because PHYSINT was originally unveiled as part of the PlayStation and Kojima Productions partnership. Now, Xbox has effectively stepped into that role, while also working with Kojima on OD and potential film and television projects.

That being said, PHYSINT does not currently have a confirmed release date or fully announced platform lineup.
