Microsoft Gives Admins Seven Days Before Edge 154 Drops WIP and MDAG

Microsoft is giving enterprise administrators just seven days to migrate away from Windows Information Protection (WIP) and Microsoft Defender Application Guard (MDAG) before both stop working in Microsoft Edge.

According to Microsoft 365 Message Center advisory MC1459132, support for WIP and MDAG will end when Microsoft Edge 154 launches globally.

The change applies to both Microsoft Edge and Edge for Business.

Microsoft says the impact should remain limited because only a “relatively small population” still uses the technologies, which have already been removed from Windows 11.

Windows 10 commercial deployments are affected

The cutoff mainly affects commercial Windows 10 environments where administrators manually enabled WIP or MDAG.

Once Edge 154 arrives, existing data protection policies that rely on WIP and isolated browsing environments that depend on MDAG will stop functioning unless organizations migrate to supported alternatives.

Administrators still relying on either technology should review their existing Edge and Windows 10 security configurations before the update rolls out.

Microsoft recommends replacements for WIP

Organizations still using Windows Information Protection should migrate to supported alternatives such as Microsoft Purview Information Protection, Microsoft Purview Data Loss Prevention, Endpoint DLP, or Intune app protection policies.

These tools can replace the data protection and policy enforcement capabilities previously handled through WIP.

MDAG users need alternative isolation protections

Organizations using Microsoft Defender Application Guard will also need to move to another supported security configuration.

Microsoft recommends using Edge’s built-in security capabilities or another supported browser isolation solution that fits the organization’s environment.

Admins should identify any remaining MDAG dependencies before installing Edge 154 to avoid losing browser isolation protections.

Admins who need more time should contact Microsoft

Organizations that cannot complete the migration before Edge 154 arrives should contact Microsoft Support or their Microsoft account team to discuss available options.

The short migration window means affected administrators have little time to review existing deployments and replace WIP or MDAG dependencies before support disappears.
