Microsoft Edge Canary appears to be finally disabling Manifest V2 extensions

Microsoft Edge Canary has started disabling Manifest V2 extensions, warning users that affected add-ons are “no longer supported in Microsoft Edge” and suggesting they “search for similar extensions”. The change appears to be part of Microsoft’s broader transition from Manifest V2 to Manifest V3.

In the latest Edge Canary, uBlock Origin 1.75.0 remains visible on the Extensions page, but Edge disables its toggle. The browser displays the message: “This extension was disabled as it is no longer supported in Microsoft Edge.”

The browser also provides an option to search for similar extensions, so users can find alternatives on Edge Add-ons Store after an affected add-on is disabled.

This could be a test and may not affect every Edge Canary user. Microsoft can roll out browser changes to limited groups before making them available more widely, so other Canary users may see different behavior.

The change is part of Microsoft’s transition from Manifest V2 to Manifest V3. Microsoft stopped accepting new Manifest V2 extensions in the Edge Add-ons Store in 2022 and has since been gradually moving toward ending support for the older format.

Microsoft has also asked extension developers to migrate their add-ons to Manifest V3. Edge uses Chromium’s extensions platform, so its move away from Manifest V2 comes as other Chromium-based browsers make the same transition.

Google Chrome has already gone through its own Manifest V2 phase-out. Chrome began disabling affected extensions as part of its transition to Manifest V3, with the behavior also appearing in pre-release versions before the wider rollout.

Edge’s current Canary behavior provides an early look at how Microsoft’s transition could affect users.

For users who depend on extensions that have not migrated to Manifest V3, the change means those extensions could eventually stop working in Edge. Developers of affected extensions will need to migrate to Manifest V3 to continue supporting newer browser versions.

Microsoft says the Edge Add-ons Store stopped accepting new Manifest V2 extensions in July 2022. Deprecation warnings began appearing in August 2026, with warnings for some users starting in mid-September. Enterprise deprecation is expected to begin in early 2027, while the date for ending MV2 updates has not yet been decided.
