Microsoft Upgrades Windows 11 Cloud Rebuild With Secure Drive Wiping

Windows 11 Cloud Rebuild can now securely sanitize storage and let IT administrators trigger a full Windows reinstall remotely, expanding Microsoft’s recovery feature for managed PCs.

Microsoft added the new capabilities in Windows 11 Insider Experimental Build 26340.9502, according to Windows Latest. The changes build on the Cloud Rebuild feature, which reinstalls Windows directly from WinRE using Windows Update.

Cloud Rebuild downloads Windows and the required drivers without needing USB installation media.

Cloud Rebuild can securely wipe Windows 11 PCs

Microsoft now gives users two choices before rebuilding a PC: Remove files and Remove & sanitize files.

The second option tells the storage hardware to securely erase data before Windows gets reinstalled. Microsoft says the standard removal option works faster, but specialized recovery tools may still recover deleted data afterward.

Users with multiple drives can choose to sanitize only the Windows drive or all installed drives. The process cannot be reversed.

Microsoft also notes that Windows relies on the storage device’s reported erase result and cannot independently confirm that the hardware completed sanitization correctly.

IT admins can start Cloud Rebuild remotely

The update also lets administrators configure and trigger Cloud Rebuild remotely through the Recovery CSP, removing the need to access WinRE physically.

Admins can permit or block rebuilds using the currently installed Windows build or specify another target build. Organizations can configure the build branch, OS version, edition, installation type, language, and unattend answer file.

Cloud Rebuild still requires Windows 11, a working WinRE environment, internet connectivity, compatible network drivers, and supported hardware.

The process removes local files, accounts, apps, and settings. Microsoft recommends testing the feature only on non-production devices while it remains in preview.
