Xbox's New Disc-to-Digital Feature Is Now Available to All Players

Xbox has finally expanded access of its disc-to-digital feature to all players. That means every player are now eligible to claim digital licenses and enjoy supported titles without relying on the disc every time they play. The feature covers most Xbox One and Xbox Series X game discs, although eligibility varies by title.

Your physical Xbox games can now unlock digital benefits

The feature was first introduced for Xbox Insiders in August, with Microsoft saying it would begin with thousands of titles and expand support over time. Players can insert a supported disc into an Xbox One or Xbox Series X console and launch the game to claim its digital entitlement.

Once an eligible disc has been registered, players can access the digital version of the game without keeping the disc inserted. Supported titles can also benefit from features such as Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming, where those services are available for the specific game. Speaking of which, SEGA and Ubisoft are some of the big publishers that have recently shown support to the feature.

The physical disc itself continues to work normally. The system is designed to add digital flexibility to games players already own rather than replace their physical copies. Xbox has also streamlined the process. Recent testing showed that when an eligible game is launched while the player is signed into their Xbox profile, the digital entitlement can be granted automatically.

Not every Xbox disc is eligible, though

In a support document, Xbox notes that “Not all Xbox One or Xbox Series X game discs are eligible for disc to digital licensing. Eligibility may change over time, and varies due to technical, licensing, publishing, manufacturing, and other factors.”
