Xbox Disc-to-Digital Is Growing Fast, and Ubisoft Is Now On Board

Microsoft’s Xbox disc-to-digital program entered testing last week, giving participating Xbox Insiders a way to convert eligible physical games into digital licenses.

Players have since started documenting compatible games, and the list has reportedly grown to well over 1,000 titles.

Xbox disc-to-digital testing now reaches every Insider ring

Microsoft recently expanded disc-to-digital testing to every Xbox Insider ring, significantly increasing the number of players who can try the feature.

Microsoft previously warned that the initial test catalog did not represent the complete list of games that could eventually support the program.

That distinction now appears important. Some publishers initially seemed absent, with reports suggesting that Ubisoft, Square Enix, Bandai Namco, and others had opted out.

Ubisoft games have now started appearing for participating Insiders.

Reportedly supported Ubisoft titles include:

• Far Cry Primal
• Far Cry 4
• Trials Fusion
• Multiple Assassin’s Creed games
• Other Ubisoft titles

The additions suggest that publisher participation can change while Microsoft continues testing the program.

Other publishers may still be reviewing licensing agreements and contractual requirements before allowing their games to participate.

It remains unclear which publishers will ultimately support Xbox disc-to-digital or how large the final catalog could become.

The current list should therefore continue changing throughout the testing phase as Microsoft adds games and publishers make decisions about participation.

The program could become increasingly significant as the gaming industry continues shifting toward digital distribution and consoles without disc drives.
