Microsoft Delays OneDrive Long Path Fix Until Late October
Microsoft has delayed its OneDrive long path fix, pushing general availability from early October to the end of October 2026.
According to Microsoft 365 Message Center ID MC1422063, the rollout should now finish by the end of November. That puts the update roughly one month behind the original schedule.
The change affects the OneDrive sync client on Windows, including OneDrive for Business.
OneDrive still struggles with very long file paths
OneDrive currently reports a sync error when a file or folder path exceeds its 520-character sync limit. In some cases, syncing can stop until users fix the affected path.
The problem becomes harder to resolve when File Explorer prevents users from renaming paths longer than 260 characters.
Microsoft says maximum path errors rank among the most commonly reported OneDrive sync problems.
The update will make long paths easier to fix
Once the new experience arrives, OneDrive will continue syncing even when a path exceeds the supported limit.
Instead of stopping the entire process, OneDrive will open a dedicated experience that helps users rename or move the affected file or folder.
The dialog will show how many characters exceed the limit and highlight which parts of the path users can rename.
Users will also be able to rename affected items even when their paths exceed 260 characters, removing one of the biggest obstacles when fixing these errors manually.
Microsoft will roll out the improvement automatically, so administrators will not need to change any OneDrive settings.
Microsoft has also been working on broader OneDrive changes. Its new OneDrive sync engine promises faster syncing, while the company recently admitted its OneDrive Photos rollout was a mistake.
Elsewhere, Microsoft continues updating its productivity services, including several Microsoft 365 Copilot improvements introduced in September.
