If you thought the PlayStation 5 Pro was already expensive, third-party retailers are now taking things to another level. GameStop is one such, which is now reportedly selling pre-owned PS5 Pro consoles for as much as $1,400, making the used console significantly more expensive than a brand-new one.

As of writing, the pre-owned/refurbished PS5 Pro Digital White is listed at $1,399.99. The pricing update was first leaked by an alleged GameStop employee on Reddit who received a notice regarding the price hike, which has been marked as an “intentional” change.

That’s a huge jump from the previous pre-owned pricing. Multiple online reports indicate that GameStop had been selling refurbished PS5 Pro units for around $800, meaning the new pricing represents an increase of roughly $600.

The PS5 Pro shortage is making things worse

To put things into perspective, Sony’s new PS5 Pro is currently listed at $899.99, meaning GameStop’s used digital model costs about $500 more than a new console at its standard retail price. The shortage appears to be playing a major role. New PS5 Pro stock has become difficult to find at major retailers, with demand reportedly increasing ahead of GTA 6. As of now, the retailer hasn’t publicly explained why it would intentionally price pre-owned systems above new ones.

For PlayStation fans hoping to grab a PS5 Pro before GTA 6, this is hardly good news. Paying nearly $1,500 for a used console is difficult to justify when the same hardware officially costs far less when purchased new. You can instead grab a decent PC at that price, but sadly, it won’t get you to play GTA 6 when it’s out on November 19.
