Xbox Launches XBOX LABS to Explore the Future of Gaming, Creation, and AI

Xbox is opening a new door to gaming experiments, and the company wants players and developers to benefit. Yesterday, Asha Sharma announced XBOX LABS, a new team exploring emerging technologies that could change how games are built, accessed, and played. This came just a few days after Xbox announced a new division called XP.

XBOX LABS will explore new ways to play games

In an internal message to Xbox employees, Asha explained why the company wants to explore these possibilities. Recent experiments have shown that games can run beyond their original hardware through software ports and browser-based technologies.

Some developers have reportedly translated Windows PC builds to Apple Silicon and brought games into browsers using WebAssembly and WebGPU. The announcement also highlights experiments that remix major games into the source code of other titles.

These developments challenge traditional boundaries between hardware, software, creation, and gameplay. Xbox believes they could make more games accessible, give older titles a new lease of life, and allow more people to become creators.

XBOX LABS will bring together a small group of game makers, engineers, and scientists. The team will build experimental projects openly, observe how people use them, and measure success through increased gaming and creative participation.

Xbox wants developers to benefit from its experiments

Asha also pointed to the growing potential of AI agents and coding tools. These technologies can write, run, and test software, making games a natural area for further experimentation.

Xbox estimates that players spend more than 72 billion hours annually playing its games. Asha compared that figure with the estimated time people worldwide spend writing code, arguing that gaming offers significant room for experimentation.

The company also plans to share the tools developed by XBOX LABS with developers across the industry. This could help more creators experiment with new approaches without being limited by traditional development methods.

Xbox says its core priorities remain unchanged

Despite the new initiative, Xbox says its existing commitments are not changing. The company will continue focusing on its 4Cs, developing games, supporting its hardware, and protecting its intellectual property and gaming communities.

XBOX LABS will provide a dedicated space to investigate emerging technology without abandoning existing projects. However, Xbox has not announced specific products, launch dates, or consumer-facing features from the new team yet.
