WhatsApp calling just got a major upgrade, and you no longer need everyone to have an account. As previously rumored, the messaging platform is rolling out guest calling, allowing anyone to join free, end-to-end encrypted calls through a link. There are no time limits, and calls can include up to 32 participants.

WhatsApp guest calls work without an account

The new feature removes a major barrier for people who rely on different communication apps. WhatsApp users can create a call link and share it with colleagues, classmates, friends, or anyone else they want to reach.

To create one, open WhatsApp’s Calls tab, tap the “+” icon, and select the option to create a call link. Send the link to your guests, who can open it in a computer browser and enter their names. Only WhatsApp account holders can create call links.

Guests must wait for the host’s approval before joining. Hosts can also remove guests whenever necessary. WhatsApp says guests cannot view other participants’ phone numbers, send messages, or directly add people to calls.

Guest calling includes useful collaboration tools

The feature supports both one-to-one and group calls, with up to 32 participants once everyone is admitted. Guests can also access essential calling features, including screen sharing, reactions, and the option to raise their hands.

The biggest advantage is that invited participants do not need to create WhatsApp accounts just to join a conversation. That could make the platform more convenient for remote meetings, study groups, and quick discussions involving people outside its ecosystem.

WhatsApp is adding calendar integrations next

WhatsApp also plans to introduce Google Calendar and Outlook integrations later this year. Users will be able to create WhatsApp call links directly from their calendars and include them in invitations. The company says these integrations will require connecting an account through the WhatsApp plugin. Invitees will still be able to join with or without WhatsApp accounts.
