WhatsApp Web Gets Calling, Waiting Room, Call Transfer & More Features

WhatsApp has just removed one of the biggest limitations of its web client. Starting today, users can make and receive voice and video calls directly from WhatsApp Web, eliminating the need to install the desktop app just to hop on a call. Meta is also introducing several new calling features aimed at making WhatsApp conversations smoother across phones, tablets, desktops, and the web.

Browser calling is finally coming to WhatsApp Web

The biggest addition is Web Calling. Whether you’re using a school computer, a work laptop that blocks software installations, or simply prefer using a browser, WhatsApp will now let you place and receive both one-on-one and group audio and video calls directly from the web.

As you may know, WhatsApp previously required its desktop application for calling on computers. With this update, opening web.whatsapp.com is all you’ll need. You’ll still get familiar calling features, including screen sharing, emoji reactions, your complete call history, favorites, and a dedicated Calls tab, all inside the browser.

Just like calls made through the mobile and desktop apps, browser calls remain end-to-end encrypted, come with no time limits, and don’t require any additional fees.

Switching devices during calls gets much easier

WhatsApp is also rolling out Call Transfer. This lets you move an ongoing group call from one device to another without hanging up. For example, you can begin a call on your phone while commuting and seamlessly continue it on WhatsApp Web or the desktop app once you’re back at your desk. The transfer also works in reverse.

Another welcome addition is Waiting Room. If you create a call link with Require approval to join enabled, participants will wait for approval before entering the group call, giving hosts much better control over who joins.

Better video quality and cleaner audio are also on the way

Meta is also improving call quality with two new enhancements. The first is QuickHD, which delivers high-definition video almost immediately after a call starts instead of making users wait for the quality to improve.

The second is Noise Suppression, a feature designed to reduce background sounds so your voice remains clear even if you’re calling from a busy office, café, or public place. The setting can be turned on or off anytime during a call.

The new calling features are rolling out gradually, so they may not appear for everyone immediately. If you don’t see them today, they should become available over the coming weeks.
