Microsoft Fixes Windows 11 Game and App Crashes With KB5127648
Microsoft has fixed a Windows 11 bug that caused certain games and applications to crash after users installed the September 2026 preview update, KB5124010.
The issue affected applications that relied on Windows’ built-in AC-3 (Dolby Digital) audio decoder, causing them to crash, fail to launch, or close unexpectedly.
According to Microsoft’s Windows release health dashboard, the company resolved the problem with the October 2026 Patch Tuesday update, KB5127648. The fix applies to affected systems running Windows 11 version 24H2 and later.
What caused games and apps to crash?
The problem affected applications that used Windows’ built-in AC-3 decoder for Dolby Digital audio playback. Some applications crashed immediately after launching, while others closed unexpectedly when users performed certain actions, such as playing music.
Games, media players, and some productivity applications were among the affected software. However, applications that relied on their own audio decoders generally continued working normally.
Although KB5124010 was an optional preview update, Windows could automatically install it on devices with the Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available option enabled.
Microsoft fixes the issue with KB5127648
Microsoft recommends installing the October 2026 security update, KB5127648, to resolve the crashes. Users can install the update through Windows Update, and no additional workaround is necessary once the installation succeeds.
However, the update has also introduced other problems for some users. Reports indicate that KB5127648 fails to install with errors 0x800f0845 and others.
Other reported issues include WPA2-Enterprise Wi-Fi authentication failures and a Smart App Control bug that Microsoft has acknowledged.
Despite these problems, KB5127648 remains Microsoft’s recommended fix for the AC-3 audio crashes.
