Microsoft has been gradually delivering on its promise of speeding up Windows 11, and it seems Microsoft Edge is the first app to benefit from the announced performance boost. The latest KB5127936 update introduces accelerated app launches, helping Edge reopen faster by removing an unnecessary step. The improvement should be especially noticeable when multitasking on busy PCs.

Windows 11 skips an extra process to launch Edge faster

Microsoft is introducing this change through Windows 11 Release Preview builds 26200.9807 and 26300.9807. The update targets Windows 11 versions 25H2 and 26H2, with the feature gradually rolling out to eligible devices.

Previously, Windows could start an additional temporary process when users opened Edge from the taskbar, Start menu, or a link. That process would then pass the request to an existing Edge instance before closing.

With accelerated app launches, Windows sends the request directly to the running instance instead. Removing that extra step shortens the launch path and helps Edge respond more quickly. Microsoft says the improvement is most noticeable when users multitask on busy devices. However, the company hasn’t shared specific performance figures showing how much faster Edge launches.

Other Windows apps could benefit from this change

The interesting part is that Microsoft sees this as the beginning of a broader Windows capability. The company says other applications could adopt the same approach to speed up their launches. For now, Edge is the first app to receive the optimization.

The change primarily benefits situations where the browser is already running in the background, rather than its first launch after a PC restart. Microsoft is also rolling out the feature gradually. Therefore, installing KB5127936 doesn’t guarantee you’ll receive accelerated app launches immediately.

KB5127936 brings more than faster Edge launches

The same update includes several other changes across Windows 11. These include a customizable File Explorer context menu, improved search results, and dark mode support for the Folder Options dialog.

Microsoft is also introducing Cloud rebuild, expanding memory integrity protection, and adding IPv6 CLAT support for Wi-Fi and Ethernet. Some features are rolling out gradually, while others are available through the update’s normal rollout.
