Microsoft has just announced a new exit route for thousands of employees. The company today introduced a Voluntary Exit Offer that could reach around 60,000 workers, as it continues reshaping its workforce amid massive investments in AI.

Microsoft’s voluntary exit offer covers four countries

Microsoft Chief People Officer Amy Coleman announced the program on October 26. The offer is available to eligible employees at level 70 and below in participating teams across the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and India.

According to Microsoft’s official announcement, eligible employees will receive financial support and career planning resources. The company says participation depends on each organization’s business priorities, customer commitments, and workforce needs.

Business Insider has independently reported by citing a company spokesperson that around 60,000 employees could be eligible for the new Voluntary Exit Offer (VEO). It’s important to note that Microsoft’s announcement itself does not specify the number of eligible workers.

Xbox, Windows, and Copilot teams could be affected

The reported list of participating organizations includes AI experiences, Copilot, CoreAI, Windows + Devices, Xbox, finance, and human resources. Some teams within Microsoft’s cloud and AI businesses are also reportedly participating.

However, the offer is not available across the entire company. Reports indicate that marketing, commercial business, discovery and quantum, and security teams are excluded. Eligibility ultimately depends on the participating organization.

The program also differs from Microsoft’s earlier voluntary retirement initiative. The new offer does not rely on age or years of service. Coleman further said the company would learn from the new program while continuing to help employees develop skills and explore internal opportunities.
