Microsoft Entra ID memberOf Operator Retires Tomorrow, Admins Must Act Now
Microsoft has issued a final warning to IT administrators ahead of the retirement of the memberOf operator in Microsoft Entra ID on November 3, 2026. Organizations still using the operator have one day to update their configurations before membership and assignment processing stops.
According to Microsoft 365 Admin Center notification MC1529463, the retirement will affect dynamic membership groups, dynamic administrative units, and entitlement management auto-assignment policies worldwide.
Why Microsoft is retiring the memberOf operator
The memberOf operator allows administrators to create dynamic groups based on membership in existing security groups, Microsoft 365 groups, and groups synchronized from on-premises Active Directory.
However, Microsoft says even a single rule using memberOf can negatively affect dynamic membership processing across an entire tenant.
The feature has remained in public preview and was never recommended for production environments. Microsoft says removing it will improve the scalability and reliability of dynamic membership processing.
What happens after November 3?
Once Microsoft retires the operator, configurations that depend on memberOf will stop processing changes.
Dynamic membership groups will no longer update their memberships, while dynamic administrative units will stop updating membership and administrative scopes. Entitlement management auto-assignment policies will also stop processing assignment changes.
Existing memberships and assignments will not disappear immediately. Instead, affected configurations will remain in their last known state, potentially creating access management problems as organizational requirements change.
What administrators need to do before the deadline
Microsoft recommends identifying and replacing all configurations that use memberOf before November 3.
For dynamic membership groups, administrators should export their group configurations from the Entra admin center, identify rules containing memberOf, and replace them with supported operators.
When no suitable dynamic membership rule exists, Microsoft recommends converting affected groups to assigned membership.
Administrators should also use Microsoft Graph PowerShell to identify affected dynamic administrative units and entitlement management policies.
After updating their configurations, organizations should verify group memberships, administrative scopes, and access package assignments to ensure everything continues working correctly.
The retirement is part of Microsoft’s broader changes to Entra ID. The company recently warned administrators to replace SMS and voice authentication before February 2027 and introduced new telephony providers ahead of the retirement.
Microsoft also announced stronger security and AI protections in its October 2026 Entra update.
