Microsoft Confirms Windows 11's Optimize Drives Tool Is Getting a Modern Redesign
Microsoft has confirmed that Windows 11’s Optimize Drives utility is on its modernization list. However, the company has yet to reveal what the redesign will look like or when users can expect it.
The tool, which helps users optimize hard drives and SSDs, has retained largely the same interface since Windows 8.
Microsoft could redesign Optimize Drives or move it to Settings
On October 15, Microsoft’s Vice President of Design, Diego Baca, shared an update about the company’s efforts to improve Windows 11.
A user responded by asking Microsoft to rebuild Optimize Drives using WinUI 3 or integrate it into the Settings app.
On October 16, March Rogers, Microsoft’s Partner Director of Design, replied, “Optimize Drives is on our list!”
The response confirms that Microsoft intends to modernize the utility, but it remains unclear whether the company will introduce a standalone WinUI 3 application or move the tool into Windows Settings.
Microsoft has not shared a release date or confirmed whether the changes will arrive in upcoming Windows Insider builds.
The plans are part of Microsoft’s broader efforts to modernize older Windows components. Recently, the company explained why users cannot move the Windows 11 taskbar and started testing Project Odeon to modernize the Settings app.
For now, Optimize Drives remains unchanged, and Microsoft has not provided further details about its modernization plans.
