We all know sorting your data is great and extremely necessary. In Power BI, the sorting function is complex and you can sort your data using different criteria.

Nevertheless, sometimes you need to do quite the opposite and to disable sorting for your information.

Unfortunately, disabling sorting in Power BI is not so obvious as it should have been, but do not worry! We have some workarounds just for you!

Also, you’re not the only one with this problem. Actually, many users complained that they can’t disable sorting in Power BI.

One user said the following on the official forum:

Hi, how it possible cancel ordered column in table in Power BI? Once I sort the column, I can’t cancel it anymore.

So, this user said that he can’t cancel a sorting once it’s enabled for columns in a table in Power BI. Today we will show you how to disable sorting in a few easy steps.

How can I remove the sort arrow in Power BI?

1. Disable sorting from Data visual

  1. Select the Data visual box from the left side of the window.power bi select data visual
  2. Click on the little box with the arrow.
  3. Click on Clear sort.power bi click on clear sorting

You can do this only for the second column. For the first one, even if you clear sorting, the ordering will remain the same.

2. Disable sorting from Table visual

If you want to sort in Table visual, then you need to click Sort again.

power bi sort again

3. Create another column

You can create a calc column to enable the desired ranking. This is not an actual random order, but it is a workaround that quite a few people use.

Remember that these are only workarounds, and Power BI doesn’t have an option to disable the ordering. So, the methods described above might not work for everyone.

This is not a major issue, but still, it is annoying to see that you can’t sort your data like you want to. Although Power BI is great in many ways, the tool has some limits.
