DirectX 12 is the future of computer gaming to many as the API promises to deliver low-level game development similar to that of consoles, meaning developers will be better able to squeeze more out of both new and old graphic cards like never before.

At the moment, DirectX 12 is only available for Windows 10, so gamers interested in seeing what their graphic cards can really do will have little choice but to upgrade to the new Microsoft operating system.

Before playing a DirectX 12 supported video game to see what the fuss is all about, we recommend doing some benchmark tests first. Futuremark recently updated its 3DMark benchmarking tool with a new demo known as Time Spy made specifically for Windows 10 computers for gamers to test out their DirectX 12 capable machines.

Here’s what Futuremark had to say:

With its pure DirectX 12 engine, built from the ground up to support new features like asynchronous compute, explicit multi-adapter, and multi-threading, Time Spy is an ideal benchmark for testing the DirectX 12 performance of the latest graphics cards.

Time Spy is free and only available with the newest version of 3DMark. If you want to unlock custom settings for Time Spy, you’ll be required to purchase 3DMark Advanced Edition.

The advanced edition at this moment costs only $9.99, but the price will rise to $29.99 after July 23, 2016. Visit the Steam Store to purchase 3DMark Advanced Edition right now.

With Rise of the Tomb Raider now supporting DirectX 12 with improvements and Oculus deciding to support the API as well, things are definitely looking up for the platform.
