AMD FSR Could Get Multi-Frame Generation for Higher FPS Gains

AMD may be preparing a major upgrade to its FidelityFX Super Resolution technology, even as FSR 4.1 has only recently arrived. Early SDK references suggest the company is exploring multi-frame generation (MFG), a feature that could significantly increase performance flexibility in future updates.
FSR Could Get Multi-Frame Generation
According to newly spotted FidelityFX SDK entries, AMD is working on support for multi-frame generation. This would allow developers to go beyond the current ~2x frame generation limit and define custom scaling ratios.
The feature appears through a new option labeled IADLX3DFidelityFXFrameGenUpgradeRatioOption, which gives developers more control compared to fixed presets. This change signals a shift toward more dynamic and customizable performance scaling.
Potential RDNA 4 Hardware Limitation
While AMD has not officially confirmed the feature, early indications suggest that multi-frame generation could be limited to RDNA 4 GPUs. This would mirror NVIDIA’s approach, where similar technology is restricted to newer architectures like the RTX 50 series.
If true, older Radeon GPUs may not receive official support, which could impact adoption across existing users.
Performance Gains vs Latency Trade-Off
Multi-frame generation could deliver higher frame rates, especially in demanding titles. However, generating additional frames introduces latency, which may affect responsiveness in fast-paced games.
